FUTURE TRADITIONS 2020

Natalia Rocafuerte

Experimental Latinx Video Showcase Curated by

During the 2020 pandemic, I put my television broadcast skills to test and joined the team at Future Traditions Festival and organized, and streamed, an Experimental Latinx Video showcase. Being a featured artist the year before, I was thrilled to help out during a difficult time to connect with other Experimental Latinx Artists, digitally across the Americas. My show was streamed LIVE on three platforms and I included artists from Colombia, El Salvador, Mexico, Dominican Republic, Peru, Puerto Rico and different parts of the U.S.

I also created the graphics for the festival based of posters from Experimental Music Festivals in South American in the 1970's I came across during my research.

I did a series of interviews with the artists available.

Future Traditions is a multimedia festival that explores digital technology as a collaborative tool for extending and facilitating traditional Latin American music and dance in the 21st century. Traditional dance and music groups are invited to actively collaborate with multimedia artists to expand and re-imagine existing cultural practices while artists already working within these mediums present new works. The festival is a platform for creating new discourses around intersections between technology, experimentation, and tradition while working toward cultural equity.

Rocafuerte uses a camcorder and projector creating a video loop of the dancers on stage in a screen dance collaboration with a traditional Oaxacan dance troupe.  Visuals are included through an analog video mixer or vintage cartoons, video synth waves and a live feed distorting masked dancers.
